Being Creative in Hawaii

A Fun DSLR Selfie in Rayne's Sunglasses. Diamond-Head Park, Hawaii.

I treat being a photographer like it is some sort of terrible addiction. Due to that it is tough to travel with anyone who isn’t also a photographer or videographer. I will linger in an area for hours to capture it the way I see it in my head which drives the rational and schedule following people of the world out of their minds. Right off the bat this means I would not do well with any girl on any trip or romantic activity.

That being said I have the best girlfriend in the world. Yes, she’s kind of a videographer, the coolest and most creative person on earth, but she’s also my biggest critic. We found ourselves in Oahu last summer shooting the north shore and I realized how lucky I am to have found someone who will take the same amount of time I will to get the shot.

Hawaii is Earth’s way of taking all of the creativity I have and thrusting it out of the ocean. Undoubtedly it’s paradise but it demands such patience to capture it’s beauty outside of the typical sunset shots that are so often (and not at all bad shots) plastered everywhere an ad for Hawaii is seen. The North Shore of Oahu is especially special and if you ever get the pleasure to be there it carries a truly magical presence that seeps into any creative venture, after all it is home to the amazing Clark Little (google him).

If you ever go to Hawaii on a photo mission my one piece of advice would be the most important thing to have with you is time. The clouds move fast, it rains on the drop of a hat, and if you are anything like me you will always wonder what that next wave will look like when it breaks. Realistically there is no way that every time you go somewhere you will have the adequate amount of time to capture it, the best thing you can do is find something that speaks to you and capture it to the best of your abilities and it will be fantastic.
