My Youtube video has 20k views... Why it means NOTHING

Posting on youtube is fun, and for me it is a low risk way to always be sharpening my video skills. I say low risk because I don’t make any money from it, but the practice is worth it, controlling the process from shooting to editing is fun for me. I made a video that has aged to accrue over twenty thousand views, and I won’t see a single penny from it. The basic principles of making money on Youtube is called monetization, which means making a small percentage of money when your video plays against ads. Youtube has requirements for channels to be monetized though, 4,000 cumulated hours of video views in the last year and 1,000 subscribers. I have neither.

In addition, Youtube requires that your content meets their community guidelines (however fluid they are) before paying out on views and whatever percentage of Youtube premium revenue they deem you’ve earned. I have tried to track down how many subscribers the video got me since I posted it, and I believe it is something like 30 according to the “Youtube Creator” app.

The practice of making videos out of anything with all kinds of equipment on any subject I feel like builds my skills and portfolio. While it is fun, it is productive too and while I don’t get paid by Youtube, the practice of making the videos show me I can deliver for clients and potential ones whatever their needs are.
